Luis Díaz Bids Emotional Farewell as Liverpool Greenlight Bayern Move, Eyes Now on Isak
Liverpool have confirmed the departure of Colombian winger Luis Díaz to Bayern Munich in a deal worth €75 million (£65.5 million), marking the end of a three-and-a-half-year spell filled with brilliance, trophies, and now, heartfelt goodbyes.
The 28-year-old, who played a crucial role in Liverpool’s recent Premier League title triumph, has signed a four-year contract with the German giants, with the option for an additional year. Having left Liverpool’s pre-season camp in Tokyo to complete the move, Díaz now becomes the third most expensive player in Bayern’s history, behind only Harry Kane and Lucas Hernández.
From the moment he arrived from Porto in January 2022, Díaz impressed with his flair, work ethic, and ability to deliver in big moments. His tally of 17 goals across all competitions last season was instrumental in helping the Reds clinch their record-extending 20th league title. Despite the club’s efforts to tie him down with a new contract earlier this year, it became increasingly clear that Díaz saw his future elsewhere — with Bayern circling, and the player pushing for a move.
Liverpool had stood firm last summer amid interest from Europe’s top clubs, but with Díaz set to turn 29 in January and Bayern submitting a new and improved bid — including achievable add-ons — the club deemed it the right time to part ways. The sale, which makes Díaz Liverpool’s third-biggest departure after Philippe Coutinho and Luis Suárez, has not only brought closure to a key chapter but also financial flexibility as the club retools under new head coach Arne Slot.
Díaz didn’t leave quietly. In an emotional farewell post on Instagram, he thanked the fans, teammates, and staff who shaped his time at Anfield. “Three years and a half that I’ll treasure forever,” he wrote. “Liverpool is, indeed, a special team, and I will keep everyone in my heart.” He also paid tribute to late teammate Diogo Jota, tragically killed in a car accident earlier this month, adding: “It would have been the perfect goodbye if we hadn’t lost one of ours in such a tragic way… We will never forget him.”
Financially, Liverpool emerge well from the deal. The club originally paid €45 million, plus €15 million in potential add-ons, to secure Díaz’s signature from Porto — though only €4 million of those were triggered. With no sell-on clause involved, Liverpool stand to make a €26 million profit on the transfer.
Díaz’s exit also clears a path for new business. With sporting director Richard Hughes overseeing more than £190 million in player sales this summer, attention now turns to reinvestment. Newcastle striker Alexander Isak remains a top target, though Liverpool know it would take a British-record fee to tempt the Magpies into selling. Encouragingly for the Reds, sources suggest Isak is keen on a move to Anfield.
With potential departures for Darwin Núñez, Harvey Elliott, Tyler Morton, and Ben Doak still on the table, the Díaz sale may only be the beginning of a bold new reshaping of Liverpool’s squad.
