The New York Knicks have made their first major frontcourt move of NBA free agency, signing Guerschon Yabusele to a two-year, $12 million contract, according to multiple league sources. Yabusele, a 6-foot-8, 260-pound forward, last played for Real Madrid in the EuroLeague, where he built a strong reputation as a physical and skilled big man. Known for his energy, soft shooting touch, and defensive toughness, the 28-year-old now gets a second chance at the NBA after originally being drafted by the Boston Celtics in 2016.
From “Dancing Bear” to International Star
Nicknamed the “Dancing Bear” during his time in Boston for his surprising agility and footwork at his size, Yabusele’s initial NBA stint was brief. He appeared in 74 games over two seasons with the Celtics from 2017–2019, averaging just 2.3 points and 1.4 rebounds in limited minutes. After being waived, Yabusele took his talents overseas and redefined his game.
In Europe, particularly with ASVEL Basket and later Real Madrid, Yabusele blossomed into a reliable stretch-four who could defend multiple positions and knock down outside shots. In the 2023–24 EuroLeague season, he averaged 11.2 points, 4.8 rebounds, and shot 37% from three, helping Madrid to another Final Four appearance.
His strong play caught the eye of NBA scouts once again, and the Knicks believe Yabusele is ready to contribute at the highest level.
Why the Knicks Made the Move
New York enters the 2025 season with high expectations after reaching the Eastern Conference Finals. With Julius Randle returning from injury and Mitchell Robinson anchoring the paint, Yabusele will provide much-needed depth off the bench — particularly as a backup power forward or small-ball center in certain lineups.
